Barefoot in the Sand

Pondering: The sea does not reward those who are too anxious, too greedy, or too impatient. One should lie empty, open, choiceless as a beach - waiting for a gift from the sea. (Anne Morrow Lindbergh)

My trip took me from San Francisco, California to Charlotte, North Carolina to Cancun, Mexico via US Airways and then to Playa del Carmen by car. Two flights, one 45-minute drive and a flat tire along the way. It’s been a long trip. Six hours, 2-hour time difference later, my sister and I finally made it to our destination — Shangri-la Caribe in Playa del Carmen.

It’s a most wonderful place with the white sand beach as its main attraction. It figures that almost everyone walk barefoot around here what with all the white sand everywhere. The guest room cottages were lovely, designed to look like cabanas, thatched roof and all. In our porch, we had our own hammocks made of the most colorful nylon strings and woven to perfection and detail.

Since we arrived earlier than the check-in time, we had to kill about two hours doing nothing but sit in the palapa, take in the wind from the sea and soak up the glorious sun. We had lunch at The Terrace Grill and then retired to our lovely cabana room - a solo unit on the Caribe side of the hotel, just a few short steps from the beach. From our window we could see the beach. We decided to stay in for the rest of the day and catch up on some sleep. We got up only to grab dinner. To cap off the evening, we watched The Irrefutable Truth About Demons on our portable DVD player. I dozed off watching Karl Urban get tortured by some satanic cult member, listening to sound of the ocean in the background.

Lovely day…
