Pondering: Writers of novels and romance in general bring a double loss to their readers; robbing them of their time and money; representing men, manners, and things, that never have been, or are likely to be. (Mary Wortley Montagu)

I sat through Rob Marshall’s Memoirs of a Geisha last night and I was bored to death.
It’s a soap opera, that’s what it was; just another twist in the age-old Pretty Woman story, albeit with Japanese characters (who were mostly played by Chinese actors) and a more serious tone. And the ending was dreadful! Maybe I’m not a romantic – though I think I am – but I just could not find anything endearing about Chiyo’s story.
Triple yawn!

Just curious about whether you had read the book? I enjoyed it, but it was several years back and if I think long and hard, it was probably a wee bit soapy and as you described but I have heard it had been changed so much. I haven’t seen the movie.

Wee bit soapy. That’s a better way of saying chick-flick. No?
